I chose John Constables “A Lane Near Dedham” for this story because it shows such a contrast to the story of “The Little Old Woman and Her Pig.” The story is filled with characters and events, action and noise. Mr. Constable’s picture is just thge opposite - a peaceful, calm, country lane where nothing seems to be happening. It’s fun to imagine that the Little Old Woman is just about to come around the corner with her new pig, and soon the craziness of the stout will end the peace and quiet of this country lane near Dedham!

This is a very old story. Mr. Joseph Jacobs put the story in a book called “English Fairy Tales” back in 1890, but he found it in an even older book, Mr. James Halliwell-Phillipps put the story in his book “Nursery Rhymes and Nursery Tales” back in 1840. Before that? Nobody knows. The story has been told, remembered, then told again, probably for hundreds of years.
