Professional Storyteller Tom Lee will perform at Bloomfield Congregational Church on Sunday, November 10th at 3:00.
The program will feature the traditional Irish folktale “The Speckled Bull,” which Lee describes as “an epic story, filled with breathtaking imagery and deeply compelling characters.” The story is a folktale, but one aimed strictly at adult listeners. Themes of jealously and obsession bring a shadow side to more familiar ideas of enchantment, transformation, and romance.
Tom Lee’s in-depth study of the tale brought him back to ancient Greek mythology – another of his great passions as a storyteller. The program will also include stories from the life of the Greek hero Herakles. “We can see how some ideas in the Greek myth evolved, from teller to teller, over thousands of years, until they appeared in an Irish folktale, told in the 1930’s.”
Tom performed “Untold Grimm, ” a selections of stories from The Brothers Grimm at Bloomfield Congregational Church last year, and has presented several programs for Bloomfield Public Library at the church while the library is under construction.
Tom Lee teaches at the University of Hartford, is a frequent guest artist at The Yale Center for British Art, a roster artist with Arts for Learning Connecticut, and a community arts partner with Hartford Public Schools.
The program will last approximately an hour. Admission is by goodwill offering, and proceeds will benefit The Connecticut Storytelling Center’s “Tellabration” fundraising project, supporting traditional storytelling in Connecticut Schools.
Tom can be heard on his podcast “The Odyssey Odyssey” (www.theodysseyodyssey.com).
